Witchcraft 101: ten things you need to know about witchcraft.

(as requested my cosmicowlchild who you should go follow immediately)

I am going to post these in a random order except for number 1 which is the absolute most important.

1) READ! I cannot stress this point enough. It gives you the knowledge to do what you need done and to make sure you don’t look like a moronic asshat parading as something you’re not. Everyone is going to give you different information about the simplest topics. If you ask ten different people about lavender you will get ten different answers. Most will tell you about it’s uses culinarily and magically. One will always come up with some shit answer that will lead you nowhere. If you’re lucky you’ll find one of those awesome people who give you five different book titles, eighteen web links and the name of someone they believe will give you good information. But at the end of the day you need to decide what info you want to use. So get as much as you can so you can see it lighted from every side. Please for the love of all that is good, read.

2) Be a skeptic. If you believe the first person you ask, you will be wrong. Even if the first person was right. Pick things apart until you’ve deconstructed the very bones. Unless you know every little thing about it, don’t move onto the next subject. It will help you in the long run and will make you feel smarter.

3) don’t take yourself seriously. Don’t get me wrong, witchcraft is a tough thing to get into and even tougher to convince other people that it’s something you’re serious about. But when you stop and think about it, you just spent a good three hours of prep work and actual work so that you could burn incense and burn some candles so that you will get that job. It’s extremely ridiculous when you think about it. I’m secure enough to realize how silly it is without discounting my own beliefs. You should be too.

4) take a break. It will get overwhelming. There comes a point when the more you start to know about witchcraft, the more you realize you don’t know about it. It gets mind boggling. Don’t freak out about it. Just put down the books, shut down the computer and go do something mind-numbing. Watch tv, read a non-witchy book, listen to some good music. You aren’t perfect. No witch is. Be kind to your brain and take a break.

5) know how to defend yourself. I’m not talking about fighting. I mean that at some point youll probably get called out on your beliefs. It could be by anyone of any religion. Even if they’re the same religion as you. Make sure you know enough about whatever path you’re taking to defend it against someone who wants to ridicule you.even if that means… GASP! Reading the bible?!

6) Don’t buy into the black magic/White magic crap. They’re the same thing. I’ve explained this in a previous post.

7) Be flexible. After you’ve adopted one belief you don’t have to ignore every other opinion that’s thrown at you. My beliefs have grown and morphed greatly over the time I’ve been practicing witchcraft. Just because you learn one thing doesn’t mean you wont hear something that rings more true to you the next day.

8) never feel guilty about your broom closet status. If you’re at a job that you don’t want anyone there to know about your spiritual life, you don’t need to beat yourself up about it. Likewise, if you’re already out and someone is giving you flack about it you should ignore them and live your life because if you wear a pentacle each day you can’t really complain if somebody raises questions about it because you made the decision to display it. You have to deal with the consequences of being out. If you’re smart, you’ll be able to educate someone about it. HOWEVER!!, if you live at your parents house and they don’t want you practicing, you have to accept their decision. You can try to get them to understand and explain it to them but if, at the end of the day, they still don’t want you to, you have to respect that.

9) this isn’t Harry potter (despite my wishes). Not every spell you cast is going to work. Don’t get discoraged because of one failure. It happens.

10) have fun with it. I personally don’t have a rule book. Some do. Some have just one specific rule. But a fact is that witchcraft is fun. I remember praying and feeling like I had just gone to beg someone for food. When I do a spell I feel empowered and energetic and I feel happy. It can be fun. So please refer to rule #3.

I hope this helps those who need it. And I hope that I explained myself in a way that makes sense. Feel free to disagree with me. In fact, question everything I just wrote.

Peace, love and tatertots to you all :D
